The existing swing mechanics system is exceptionally difficult to learn and proof of this lies in the millions of gold coaching channels, golf tips and coaches, all of whom will give you a DIFFERENT SWING DIAGNOSIS – and if you have been for lessons, you KNOW this to be true.
I have seen countless surveys on Facebook golf groups where golfers are asked whether they understand the golf swing and the majority of answers are, ” I’ll never understand it nor will anyone else!” This alone is proof that the current swing mechanic paradigm is far too complex.
For most golfers, it would take at least five years or more to become proficient and that would have to include thousands of hours of practise, as well as coaching and equipment – this is not a sign of proficiency, but one of great inefficiency!
Further proof of this exists in the experience of golf coaching. Almost every single golfer I have ever worked with has told me the same story:
” I have been for coaching with XX coach and YY coach, and while I am there I can hit OK, but as soon as I’m on my own- it all goes back to shit.”
” When I went to XXX Coach he told me this was wrong and when I went to YY coach, he told me something else!”
These stories are commonplace around the world and the reason is because despite the fact that this swing mechanics system is taught in golf schools, EVERY coach interprets it differently. Imagine if this was medicine!
If you take music for example, while teachers may teach the fundamentals differently, the fundamentals REMAIN THE SAME and faults with those will be diagnosed the same by any qualified music teacher, with very similar remedies proposed.
Golf is not like that.
There is no set structure in terms of diagnostics and your pro/coach will watch you hit a few balls and then make a diagnosis as to the issue.
This is mostly subjective and it often happens that as soon as one aspect of the swing is fixed, another one fails – a bit like ESKOM’s electrical infrastucture!
Every year, there are probably hundreds of new gadgets and gizmos that come onto the golf market aimed at helping golfers improve an aspect of their swing.
This ranges from grip sensors and moulded plastic devices that give you the correct grip to swing devices with weights, slings, strings and flex shafts to help with everything from the downswing triggers to lag to swing speed.
Why do you think this happens?
Again, it’s a testament to the complexity of the existing golf swing method – that it has so many elements to it that people can create and market a monstrous variety of devices to assist.
Except – there’s a fundamental problem, well actually there are a few.
The first one is that golfers that buy these devices don’t have the correct swing mechanics to start with, so while they may offer some small relief or improvement when using it, they still have the same swing mechanics with or without the device.
The second issue is that many people that buy (and sell) these ideas may not have a proficient swing themselves, so it becomes a case of the blind leading the blind.
Well, this depends on where you look.
According to current swing methods , some say there are three or four main components like the backswing, takeaway, downswing and impact position, while others break the swing down into six or more components.
They are the pre-shot routine, the waggle, the address, takeaway, backswing, top of backswing, downswing, impact, release, follow through, then there is also the swing plane, tempo, rhythm and timing.
Those are the ‘outer’ components, the inner ones are the grip, grip pressure, wrist position, shaft angle on takeaway, hip and shoulder alignment, shaft position halfway back, clubhead position on takeaway, shaft position at halfway, shaft position at top of backswing, transition, hip and weight shift, knee flex, hip and shoulder rotation through downswing and so it goes on!
And within every one of those are another set of measurements and metrics that have to be achieved before you even strike the ball!
No wonder golfers struggle with this method – there is just too much to remember and all of this doesn’t include target alignment and the mental elements of the swing and game either!
Safe to say, if you added up everything that has to happen in a golf swing to hit the shot proficiently – there are probably at least 50 different components involved!
How the f*ck is ANYONE supposed to be able to KNOW what they are and then get them accurate enough and in the right sequence to perform a golf swing with ANY kind of consistency.
The answer is – you don’t!
The answer is you struggle.
You take lessons, you buy gear, you watch YouTube videos , you change clubs, new balls, new coach.
You quit. Restart. Find the same issues and eventually there are only one of two outcomes.
You watch good players at the range and wonder how much time and effort they have put in to get there and even they will say they are struggling to be better.
Haven’t you EVER considered the glaring fact that the reason you and millions of golfers are struggling to become proficient in golf is NOT because of anything you’ve done or haven’t done- but simply because the swing method you are trying to master is not masterable, unless you have infinite resources and time?
Well, it’s time to consider this seriously.
What if:
Guess what?
You can.
